It was learned overnight from a Nairobi-based senior tourism stakeholder that the British government and High Commission in Kenya has significantly reduced the “off limits” advice, which was in place for visits to the ancient coastal town of Lamu, Kenya.

Previously, the area was up to 150 kilometers from the Somali border, reaching well beyond Lamu itself, but has now been trimmed to only 60 kilometers, to which all but essential travel should be avoided.

The Lamu tourism trade has welcomed this development and hailed the progress made by the Kenyan armed forces, which have, since the hit-and-run attacks by Al Qaida affiliate Al Shabaab last year, gone deep into Somali to clear the country of militants and pirates, and is now working as part of AMISOM, the UN and AU mission to bring peace to the Horn of Africa.

Not changed in language or substance, however, were general advisories to British travelers intent on going to Kenya about the general threat of terrorism in Nairobi and Mombasa in particular, something other tourism sources immediately took issue with. Said one regular contributor: “We had a few isolated incidents since our army went after those terrorists in Somali, but nothing has happened to any tourist hotel or resort, because security has been stepped up very much since then. Kenya has learned some big lessons, and hotels and resorts, even restaurants, have individual additional security in place, which is greatly improved since last year’s events in Lamu.

“Of course, we are telling tourists to be observant and vigilant wherever they travel on safari or on excursions from their resorts. But this is no different from what visitors to London are told also, to be observant and vigilant. Many travel advisories are only in place because the foreign offices fear legal repercussions if they do not overstate warning, and visitor numbers show that tourists know about these connections. They still travel and we are grateful for that.”

Good news nevertheless for Lamu and the nearby resorts, which will have renewed hope now that 2012 will make up for the losses sustained when tourism literally came to a standstill, and good news for Lamu and its cultural and religious festivals, which will undoubtedly be sellouts once again.

Sunset was early in Lamu, and as the sun dipped below the horizon, the town began to take on a completely different ambience. As the heat of the day subsided, the locals began to emerge from their houses to shop and eat. Incense and spice burned around us – their smoke swirling aroud us in the warm sea breeze. Radios blurted out an incomprehensible mix of English and Swahili, and a couple of bars with TVs attracted groups of men huddled around the flickering screens.

Shadows stretched across the ground, and the narrow alleys became darkened by the tall buildings above it. Lanterns were lit and randomly illuminated patches of light onto the path floor and walls. It felt more Robin Hood Prince of Thieves rather than Indian ocean. With little light to illuminate the surrounds, it was difficult to make out our peoples’ faces, and at times rather unsettling given that we had long ago lost our bearings. However we trusted in the safety of the crowds and followed the waves of people from one alley to the next. It was an unusual but fascinating feeling of unease and excitement.

Suddenly a bearded face approached us and asked if we needed direction. “Is there a good place to eat?” we asked hopefully. He smiled back and took us on a wild goose chase, leading us down a labyrinth of alleyways. We had no idea where we were going or whether we had stupidly walked into a mugging situation. Thankfully we eventually stopped off at the front of a rooftop restaurant. We handed him a few pennies as thanks and felt relieved to see the illuminated dining area at the top of the stairs. We climbed up and sat perched at the top of the building – an open plan room overlooking the tops of the building roofs. A warm and humid breeze blew through as we sat back and enjoyed a candle lit grilled fish supper. By some minor miracle, and after careful guidance from the restaurant owner, we somehow managed to find our way back to our B&B that night.

The next morning, it was as if we had awoken to a different place once more. The long dark shadows and the slightly sinister ambience of last night was replaced by buoyant market stalls fanning out in all directions along the alleys. Life went on as usual, with the ever-present donkeys pulling carts clumsily along the dusty pathways. We decided to stretch our legs out and veered towards the north part of the island of Sheila – where a famed 12km stretch of golden sand lay. As we walked up, we were accompanied by the gliding dhows that were tracking the shore parallel to us.

The following morning we decided to book onto a dhow tour. There was little shade on these romantically built vessels. The hull was built with thick dark planks of wood, and the head of the boat was colourfully decorated with an array of patterns. Up above, a 20 foot cream-coloured sail stood inflated with the sea breeze. As our captain untied the rope at the harbour, we moved away silently and glided through the waves with a faint washing sound at the head of the boat as it made its way through the minor swell of the sea. We moved on through the tangled mangroves just off shore, and also tried our hand at some line fishing. After a relatively successful catch, we erected the sail and moved on towards a desert island for lunch.

We clambered onshore and dragged our ice box of fish and other fruit and vegetables. We gathered a pile of small twigs and branches, and laid them out on the sand floor underneath the flickering shade of some palm trees. We sat back on the soft sand, legs stretched out, whilst our captain went about gutting and grilling the fish. We tucked into the fish excitedly, pulling apart the delicate white flesh with our fingers. The chargrilled taste of the fish, and the curried spices on the skin complemented each other perfectly. It was a culinary masterclass.

Despite only spending a week on the island, we quickly got into an enjoyable and relaxing routine. Our days would usually consist of a fresh fruit breakfast followed by a long hour’s walk along the seafront up to the northern area called Shela, where there were a scattering of some exclusive western owned villas, and the well known high-end but laid-back hotel bar Peponi’s. As the sun rose high in the sky, that was our cue to seek some refuge. We would head to the shaded rooftop area back at our B&B and lay back in our cushioned loungers, taking in the breathtaking views across the rooftops and out to a sparkling sea. The late afternoon brought with it a refreshing cool, and we would make our way to a deserted stretch of beach, cooling off in the open waters.

Food was a major part of our enjoyment in Lamu. Of all the delicious food we had, there was one meal that I will forever remember – a seafood experience ranking up there with the best sushi in Japan. That first evening and on the recommendation of our B&B host, we came across a beautiful oasis amongst the hussle and bussle of the market – immaculately clean and with an almost boutique feeling in the property, that we had not come across elsewhere. Inside a small fountain let out a delicate rippling of water. A staircase spiralled around the bright white courtyard, with lanterns dotted on each step, flickering provocatively in the breeze. At the top was a private illuminated dining area, without a roof and looking up to a canvas of sparkling stars. Around us, we could see the top of the white stone washed buildings gleaming in the moonlight. Carpets had been laid out, and large opulent cushions provided our seating around low deep brown wooden tables. The plates and cutlery were simple yet tasteful. The entire property exuded low-key taste and opulence.

The short fish menu listed a stand out candidate of curried lobster and grilled vegetables. The succulent white flesh of the lobster was melt-in-your-mouth, and more than a match to the spectacular setting around us. The price for a whole lobster? A ridiculously cheap $15. We had discovered a gem. As I sat back cool and contented, I reflected on what had been a fascinating week in Lamu. It’s difficult to beat the combination of beautiful climate, long deserted beaches and fascinating local culture – but that is exactly we had found. This is what travel’s all about, I thought rather smugly.

Lamu formed the second part of our African adventure. After a fascinating safari watching the wildebeest migration in the Masa Mara, we were looking forward to a much more relaxing affair, lazing around on the tropical island of Lamu. It was a brief journey by propeller plane from Nairobi to Lamu, as we tracked the golden sands of the east coast up towards the Somali border. We touched down onto a dusty sand strip in the middle of an unkempt field, with overgrown scubbery bleached by the blazing sun. Within minutes of our luggage being taken off the plane, one of the locals had picked up our rucksacks and started walking purposely down towards a jetty. Struggling to keep up, and half worried that a stranger had grabbed all our belongings, we eventually caught him up as he reached the rickety wooden platform. We crossed carefully across the splintered planks of the jetty, before climbing down onto a small brightly coloured wooden boat, that was bobbing up and down over the swell of the sea.

It was a short and pleasant journey across the channel, with the sea spraying us refreshingly as it crashed through the tops of the waves. In the distance, we could make out the white stonewashed buildings of Lamu town, and as we got closer, we picked out the canons dotted along the shoreline – a reminder of the island’s exotic past when it was a key stop-off on the spice trade routes from Arabia.

Lamu is still relatively unknown in tourism terms. It was precisely for this reason that we chose it, hoping it would be an undeveloped Zanzibar, with picturesque beaches yet still with a genuine market town feel. As we took our first steps on Lamu, this quickly became evident. Arriving into the picturesque harbour was like stepping back in time. Local men sat on the sea walls with their legs swinging lazily. Donkeys were the monopoly on all island transport, and shuttled up and down the sea front carrying all manner of goods strapped to their backs.

It wasn’t long befoe another volunteer shuffled over to us to offer their services to take us to our B&B for the night. Our bags were quickly hauled onto their backs and they disappeared inland. After weaving through a maze of interlocking alleyways, we stopped outside a large but beautifully engraved wooden door – an iconic part of Lamu architecture. The door opened to a bright white grin. “Jambo! Welcome!” he said. The inside of the building housed a small courtyard, with a small fountain providing a relaxing ambience. Lining along the outside of the courtyard were enticing sofa recliners.

With out stomachs rumbling, we were keen to head back towards the harbour and savour some of the locally caught fish that we had heard much about. We left our bags with our host, and ventured back through the alleyways, carefully looking back to help us familiarise ourselves with the maze around us. It was mid-afternoon, and the restaurants were emptying out. We found one overlooking the sea, and with a line of plants swaying invitingly in the sea breeze. Lunch was delicious grilled snapper, and a fresh citrus salad of tomatoes, cucumber, onion, and lemon topped off with chopped coriander. It was washed down with a beautifully necta-like mango juice. My taste buds were singing. We felt rejuvenated.

After a brief wander away from the harbour and out of town along the sea front, we decided to be head inland to try and locate some of the markets embedded deep in the maze of alleyways. Once we accepted the inevitability of getting lost, we delighted in the feeling of freedom and exploration. The stonewashed buildings were blackened with dirt, yet many housed beautifully engraved doors and window frames. Amongst these buildings was also evidence of a wealthy past, with large and impressive colonial architecture – from the faded pastel-coloured post-office to the imposing columns of the towering town hall.

One of the best hotels in Kenya, The Majlis Hotel, on an island off Kenya’s north coast, was never intended to be a resort. Set on the beachfront on Manda Island in the Lamu Archipelago, the original villa was completed in 2005 as a retreat for an Italian couple, Nanni and Elena, their three sons and their families, as an idyllic escape from the European winter.

Two more villas were built on the property to accommodate the growing number of friends coming to stay, and from there it became a logical decision to open the compound as a resort for all to enjoy. In October 2009, the 25 room beach hotel was opened for business in Kenya.

The Majlis still does not identify itself as a hotel, however, and aspires to offer visitors the comfort and intimacy of a private residence. Its name, Majlis, is a nod to Lamu’s earlier history as an Omani protectorate. In Arabic, the word means “a place of sitting” or a place where guests are entertained.

Viewed from the bay, the bleached coral buildings of beach resort in Kenya blend seamlessly with its surroundings. Its interiors, jointly executed by Nanni and interior designer Armando Tanzini, reflect Swahili and Italian culture.

Equidistant from all of the villas stands a breezy restaurant which offers Swahili, Italian, Japanese and international cuisine. Built in traditional Swahili style, its steeply pitched roof is covered with more than 1 million palmleaf “tiles” and accommodates a rooftop bar.

The hotel’s two pools – the Majlis and Villa Kusi pools – are shaded by acacia and palm trees and both have views over the picturesque Ras Kitau Bay, and across to the village of Shela on Lamu Island.

With a range of activities on offer such as deep-sea, reef and river fishing, sailing in a Mozambique style dhow, beach and bush safaris, snorkeling and kayaking, there’s no risk of being bored at the beach hotel in Kenya. And to keep your conscience clear, the Majlis was built with entirely locally sourced materials and has a new hybrid energy system – meaning it has substantially
